Sayulita – The Mexican Surfing City

This beloved surfer’s town is often referred to crown jewel of the Riviera Nayarit. Situated on Mexico’s Pacific Coast, this once normal fishing village has turned into a city and a certified tourist destination.
Still possessing a low key vibe, Sayulita may be a lot of things but it is first and foremost, an excellent surfing spot. The city’s main bay boasts a nice break perfect for beginners. But there are also sections that challenge the most skilled surfers. That is why there are several world-class surfers that call Sayulita their home.
Surfing breaks in the bay are formed year round, but the period between December and March is considered to best time for this thrilling water sport. There are also other beaches all around Sayulita that produced excellent breaks. You can book a guided day trip by car or boat to reach these surfing gems. And if you have never tackled surfing before, the beach area has some rental shops that offer lessons as well as board and kayak rentals. Aside from surfing, stand up paddle boarding has also become a favorite among adventurous tourists.
Sayulita’s city center is compact enough that you can walk to all major sections. You can also rent a car if you decided to stay a little farther from the town center. Gifted with a lush forest landscape, this Mexican city is the perfect base for various hiking excursions. If you take the opportunity to follow seemingly random dirt roads, you will be rewarded by discovering gorgeous hidden beaches. Organized jungle tours are also offered by local operators. You can tackle the lush jungle by riding an ATV, a horse or a mountain bike with an experienced guide showing you the way.
If you are a fan of the sea, explore it further by renting a kayak or going for a panga boat ride. Whale watching is a popular activity during the months of November through March. Species like Brydes Whales, Orcas and Humpbacks, as well as a variety of dolphins, usually swim the waters of Riviera Nayarit during this time. One of the nearest major airports to Sayulita is the Puerto Vallarta International Airport, which is about 30 miles from the famous surfing spot. You can easily take a bus or taxi from the airport. Public transportation on the buses is inexpensive. The journey to Sayulita from the airport takes less than an hour, and leads you through a luscious jungle terrain.
Complete with a wide range of accommodation, Sayulita has everything from beachfront camping to luxury hotels and villas. There is also no shortage of restaurants and cafes in the town. It is easy to find simple taco stands and cafes. But just around the corner, there are also world-class dining restaurants that boast award-winning menus.
