Kayaking in the drop can be one of the best times to get on the river or pond, but extra caution must be taken. In the fall often the nights are cool which cools the water and the times are short so the h2o does not have time to warm up.

Once i paddle in the fall along with spring I bring extra set of close in a water resistant bag, and I always put on a P. F. M. just in case I get damp. Even if the water is not chilly enough to cause hypothermia, it can make for uncomfortable journey if you happen to get wet.

Therefore kayaking or canoeing inside the fall can be one of the best periods to be out on the water. Water levels are usually at a excellent level with the fall down pours and the ground not consuming much water the waterways have a steady flow involving water coming out of streams in addition to field runoff.

You have several choices when it comes to where to go kayaking from the fall in S. W. To. such as The Grand River, Large Creek (Long Point), Dark Creek (Port Dover), a few I have written about in some other articles. In my opinion the best place regarding fall kayaking in H. W. O. is the Nith River.

The reasons I think this is actually the best place for slide kayaking in S. Watts. O. is because of it’s area, the water level, and the wind flow factor. The Niths’ main location makes it easy to get to. Beginning in New Hamburg it can be close to Kitcener and Waterloo. Passing through Ayr it is near to Cambridge, finally ending in the Grand River in Paris, france.

Even though there are some deep gaps on the Nith, for the most part you never need to be in more than a foot or maybe more of water. If for whatever reason you do end up in the water, you need to be able to stand up and go walking to shore. This is where that will extra set of cloths are available in.

Finally the wind factor. Lots of people do not think about the wind when heading out for a day boating. On a river like the Great that runs pretty much within a straight S. W. path, and you get a head the wind blowing up the river toward you it can make for a very difficult vacation. A few years ago while riding on the Grand with some buddies there was a woman with a couple small children in a canoe and it also was very windy, with no one to paddle inside front she was having blown all over the river. The girl was having a very hard time frame keeping the canoe straight. Fortunately a six man number came by and 2 guys got in the paddling and the woman and kids received in the raft.

The Nith has a lot of high banks and lots of twist and turn. Also on a windy day on the Nith you are going to only be in the wind before you get around the next bend. It is far better if the wind is coming out from the west.

The Nith might be run any where between Brand-new Hamburg and Paris, the length between most bridges is all about two hours. A great part for novice paddlers could be the bridge at Drumbo rd. (county rd 29), or maybe the one just down steady stream on Blenheim rd to the First or second brdge in Canning. The released for the first bridge will be on the left side just after the passage, the second is on the right area about 100 ft. upstream from the bridge. Even the a couple of bridges in Canning which can be only one minute apart through vehicle, is almost an hour around the river. The bridge with Richwood (County rd 5) to the second bridge within Canning is about two several hours. My wife likes this section since there are no big rapids, and it is quite easy going, but there is continue to lots of nature to see.

My personal favorite section is from the along stream bridge in Canning to Optimist Park within the south end of Rome on the Grand River. Mainly because it is a real easy store and put out (short have to vehicle), it is a gorgeous section of the river, and some nice rapids while you come into Paris. I will set my kayak skirt about for this section when the normal water is cold. It takes 4 – 5 hours to do this section. You are able to cut it in half simply by putting in at the Puttown rd bridge (lower downstream side). When you first get in at Canning the house you go past about the right just past the link is the Gretzky homestead wherever Walter Gretzky grew up. David use to play on the freezing water of the Nith sea when he was a boy going to his Grandparents.

As you keep Canning that will be the last the thing is of houses for a few hours, and you also get the feeling you are a lot further away from civilization than you. If you don’t make a lot of noises you may even see deer, pussy or fox. My previous trip down the Nith on Nov. 14Th I had formed just got done taking a image as I floated down the actual river, I was putting my very own camera in my pocket once i looked up to see a three level buck had just wandered out down stream contact form me. I’m not sure when he saw me however he didn’t seem to proper care. I got a great picture plus the deer just walked with out the other side as well as into the field.

As you be given Paris there are three models of rapids that you should be careful as you go through them. You might have to do some maneuvering to make it through them, try not to get sideways. As you carry on down under both foot bridges that overlap the river, it transforms to the left and enters the particular Grand River below the London Dam, from here it is a quick trip under the high level connection to Optimist Park for the right side after the homes end.
